O2's exclusivity agreement with Apple in the UK for the iPhone is coming to an
end, as the device is to be available on both Orange and vodafone. O2 and the UK's
two non-iPhone mobile network operators will undoubtedly need to find a
response. However, the shift in Apple's strategy highlighted by the
announcement means that other markets are likely to follow suit.

O2 UK to Offer Free Twitter SMS Updates
O2 UK has announced that it will offer free text message updates for the Twitter service from next month. From the start of August, every O2 customer will be able to switch on text notifications within Twitter and receive replies and direct messages completely free. O2 customers will also be able to send updates to Twitter as part of their normal text message bundle or for the cost of a normal text. more

European Court Ruled Dutch Operators Colluded on Sales Commissions
The European Court of Justice has ruled that a single meeting can be used to presume that an illegal cartel exists between companies, and that local regulators are able to apply fines when that occurs. The ruling comes from an incident in 2001, when the five Dutch mobile network operators are accused of colluding to lower commissions paid their retailers. more

Virgin Mobile Tops UK Mobile Broadband Tests
The results are now available for the first Mobile Broadband Genie Road Trip Awards. The exercise directly pitted dongles provided by six of the UK's mobile broadband suppliers (O2, Orange, 3, T-mobile, Virgin Media and vodafone) against each other on a 350-mile rail journey over two days. more

The UK government has published details of plans to revamp radio spectrum management which could resolve a long-running battle between the two original mobile networks. vodafone and O2 have been fighting plans proposed back in 2007 by the telecoms regulator to take back some of their licensed radio spectrum and refarm it to the later networks. more
