Telecom New Zealand has announced the early launch of its WCDMA overlay of its existing CDMA network - for the 13th May. CEO Paul Reynolds said the development of the Telecom XT Mobile Network had progressed extremely well and the service will be operational across the country from launch day. more

ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year
China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward. more

Orange and Vodafone Outsource their UK Network Management
Two of the UK's mobile networks have separately - but on the same day - announced network maintenance outsourcing deals. Orange UK has given a 5-year contract to Nokia Siemens Networks, while vodafone UK granted a 7-year contract to Ericsson. more

According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. Verizon Announces LTE Deployment Plans - Going Live in 2010
Verizon's CTO, Dick Lynch has outlined the company's plans to roll out an LTE upgrade for its wireless network. Lynch announced that Verizon Wireless has selected Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as primary network vendors for its initial LTE network deployments. These two vendors are expected to build the underlying infrastructure that will enable Verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010. more

Milan to get Mobile Data Speed Upgrade to 28Mbps
Ericsson and Telecom Italia have announced plans to deploy a network upgrade offering peak mobile download speeds of up to 28Mbps in early 2009. The MIMO upgrade in the city of Milan will also offer peak upload speeds of 5.8Mbps. more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones
The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers. more
