Safaricom Subscriber Base Up - Market Share Down

Kenya's Safaricom has reported that its subscriber base has risen by 11.2 percent during the second half of 2008, although it lost market share to new entrants into the market. Safaricom said it had 13.3 million subscribers and its market share has fallen to 77 percent from 81 percent at the end of September, when it had 12 million customer.  more

Competition Commission approves Vodacom/Vodafone merger

South Africa's Competition Commission has recommended the approval of the proposed merger between Vodafone Group and local mobile operator, Vodacom Group and has referred the transaction to the Competition Tribunal for approval.  more

Vodafone Report Says Mobile Phones Drive Economic Growth

A report funded by Vodafone has looked at mobile phone use in India, and found clear evidence to suggest that mobile penetration facilitates economic growth. It shows that Indian states with 10% higher mobile phone penetration will enjoy an annual average growth rate 1.2% higher than those with a lower teledensity.  more

Safaricom Subscriber Base Jumps 50% in Six Months

Kenyan mobile operator, Safaricom has reported that it subscriber base rose over the six months to October by 50.3% over prior year position of 7.956 million to 11.956 million - while turnover increased by 20% compared to September 2007 to Kshs 34.5 billion (US$469 million).  more

Amdocs Buys Mobile Web Personalisation Firm, ChangingWorlds

Amdocs has announced that it is to buy Changing Worlds, a privately-held provider of personalization and portal solutions for mobile service providers. Under the terms of the agreement, Amdocs has agreed to pay US $60 million in cash, net of cash on hand, subject to post-closing adjustments. Additional consideration may be paid later based on the achievement of certain performance metrics.  more

Telecoms Charity Sends Aid to Pakistani Earthquake Victims
