Ericsson completes live network upgrade for Vodafone Essar

Ericsson says that it has completed the world's largest upgrade of a live mobile network, and done it at a record pace. To improve quality of service for more than 13 million Vodafone Essar subscribers in India's four key zones including three large metro cities, Ericsson replaced more than 10,500 of the operator's GSM radio sites, reaching a peak rate of one site every minute.  more

Idea Cellular Gets Approval for Tower Separation

India's Idea Cellular has received approval from its shareholders to split off its tower assets into a separate company, Idea Cellular Towers Infrastructure. The new company, which will manage Idea's 11,000 towers will now be merged with Indus Towers, the three-way joint venture with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar.  more

Essar Group Moves its Vodafone Shareholding into Holding Company

India's Essar Group is reported to have moved part of its 33% stake in Vodafone Essar to a new stand-alone company with the intention to use it as collateral for fund raising purposes. A person privy to the development told the Economic Times that the diversified Essar group has transferred a 10.97% stake from its telecom arm Essar Teleholdings to a newly-created firm ETHL Communications Holdings.  more

Hutchison Warns Off Possible Indian Tax Liability in Sale to Vodafone

Hutchison Telecom International has accepted that it might have to make some payments in regards to the ongoing tax dispute in India over the sale of its stake in Hutchison Essar to Vodafone in May 2007. Vodafone Raises Debt for Indian Expansion
