The mobile market in the Middle East and Africa seemed to slow down in the second quarter of 2007. Indeed, we have to go back four years, to the second quarter of 2003, to find its equal. In both periods, the market grew by 8.0%, but while this implied fewer than 5 million new connections in 2003, in 2007, it meant 24 million. Looking across the markets what we see is that most of the fastest growing businesses were in Africa, rather than the Middle East, where markets are characterised by much higher penetration rates. more

EARNINGS PREVIEW: Vodafone Fiscal Year Revenue Seen +6.3% At GBP31.2 Billion
LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Twelve months after a number of high-profile investors questioned Vodafone Group Chief Executive Arun Sarin's strategy - or lack of one - for revenue growth in Western Europe, the company is expected Tuesday to come in near the higher end of company forecasts, reporting a 6.3% rise in fiscal year group revenues. more

Who are the Top 10 Operators in Africa and Mid-East
Once again, the components of the list of the ten largest companies in the Middle East and Africa region are unchanged quarter on quarter, but, as before, there are several positional changes. Vodacom in South Africa is still by far the largest business in the region, with 23.9m customers and it is difficult to imagine its position being threatened at any time in the near future. The only other likely contenders for the top spot are Nigerian - given the three to one difference in population between the two countries - but with five competitors there, rather than just three, the threat could take some time to materialise. As it is, Nigerian companies take fifth and sixth place on the list and even these two taken together still don't quite match Vodacom's total. more
