Egyptian Mobile Market Growth to Slow in 2009
Growth in the Egyptian mobile telecoms market is expected to slow by a third this year, an analyst with EFG-Hermes has predicted. Marise Ananian, head of telecoms research at EFG-Hermes says that the country will add around 8 million new subscribers during 2009, compared to the 12 million in 2008. more

Telecom Egypt Revenues Up on Vodafone Investment
Egypt's landline monopoly operator, Telecom Egypt (TE) has reported a ten-percent rise in full year profits for 2008 to EGP2.79 billion (US$492.2 million), driving largely by its 45% stake in Vodafone Egypt. However, the firm reported a drop in Q4 profits of 27.7% to EGP831 million (US$147.7 million). more

Arab Region Nears 200 Million Mobile Subscribers
A new report from Arab Advisors Group has found that Arab telecom operators served 194.5 million cellular subscribers and 35 million mainlines by end of June 2008. The report noted that STC's Al Jawwal, Egypt's Mobinil and Vodafone Egypt are the largest Arab cellular operators in terms of subscribers. more

Vodafone Interested in Nigerian Investment
Vodafone has expressed an interest in buying a stake in Nigeria's state owned land-line and mobile operator, Nigeria Telecommunications (NITEL). Nigeria's Vice President Dr Goodluck Jonathan, speaking after a meeting with Vodafone executives led by the its Chief Executive Officer UK, Paul Donovad said that the government is looking for a speedy privatisation of the company. more

The mobile market in the Middle East and Africa seemed to slow down in the second quarter of 2007. Indeed, we have to go back four years, to the second quarter of 2003, to find its equal. In both periods, the market grew by 8.0%, but while this implied fewer than 5 million new connections in 2003, in 2007, it meant 24 million. Looking across the markets what we see is that most of the fastest growing businesses were in Africa, rather than the Middle East, where markets are characterised by much higher penetration rates. more
