South Africa's Competition Commission has recommended the approval of the proposed merger between Vodafone Group and local mobile operator, vodacom Group and has referred the transaction to the Competition Tribunal for approval. more

South African competition investigation
South Africa's Competition Commission has launched an investigation into the simultaneous tariff rises from the two GSM networks in the country. The commission is to also investigate the GSM roaming agreement signed between vodacom and the markets new entrant Cell-C to ensure there are no competition issues. The commissioner, Menzi Simelane said that a preliminary report will be ready in about three weeks and from that a decision will be made if a full investigation will be warranted. There have been previous complaints of collusion between the networks, particularly in 1996 when a leaked memo indicated that the networks were co-operating on tariff changes." more
