Vodacom launches a new vehicle tracking SIM card for South Africa
South Africa's vodacom has launched a vehicle tracking service in cooperation with Tracker and Sierra Wireless. The inSIM embedded SIM component was designed and developed by Wavecom, now part of Sierra Wireless, and will be used by Tracker, a stolen vehicle recovery and fleet management company. vodacom provides Tracker with its network services. more

Vodacom Taps Andrew for Wireless Coverage In South African World Cup Stadiums
Andrew Solutions says that it has won a contract from South Africa's vodacom to deploy indoor coverage in five of the 10 South African stadiums to be used for the 2010 World Cup. Andrew's multi-operator ION-M optical distributed antenna system supports current GSM 900/1800 and UMTS frequency bands as well as next generation LTE and WiMAX networks. The systems' basic architecture involves fiber optic and coaxial cables, master and remote units, and other subsystem products that receive and transmit signals from dedicated operator base stations to customer handhelds throughout the facility. more

Increased 3G uptake drives growth in South Africa
South Africa finished Q1 09 with a penetration rate of 112.0%, but this was not the highest rate in Africa, let alone mainland Africa. The former honour went to the Seychelles with 142.9%; the latter went to Libya with 118.8%. In real terms the South African market finished Q1 09 with 48.87m customers, having grown by 15.5% year on year. This was actually an improvement on the year-earlier figure of 14.4%. Annual net additions were up from 5.32m to 6.54m, with the increase in 3G uptake a key factor in this upturn. At the end of Q1 09, there were 4.7m W-CDMA users, up by 2.3m or 95.0% year on year. more

Vodafone Q2 Revenues Rise by 9.6% to $17.7 Billion
Vodafone has reported that its Q2 revenues were up 9.3% to £10.74 billion (US$17.7 billion), including the positive impact of exchange rate movements of 8.6 percentage points and a 3.1 percentage point benefit from merger and acquisition activity, primarily attributable to the additional stake in vodacom. more

South Africa based vodacom has issued a trading statement, reporting that its Q2 revenues rose 12.2% to R14.2 billion (US$1.83 billion) compared to the same quarter last year. The increase was as a result of organic revenue growth of 5.9% and Gateway contributing approximately R800 million in the quarter. more

Nokia Losing Mobile Internet Traffic Market Share in South Africa
Mobile ad agency, mKhoj has reported that the market share of mobile internet traffic from Nokia handsets in South Africa has dropped from 46% in January to 39% last month. Samsung currently holds 33% of the market, and rose from 20% in January. The iPhone made its entrée into the market, but only contributes 0.06% of the total network traffic, making it a relatively small but growing player. more
