European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges

The European Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on SMS and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another EU country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from EUR0.46 to EUR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from EUR0.22 today to EUR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad.   more

Europe Votes to Reduce Roaming SMS and Mobile Data Costs

Yesterday evening the European Parliament, through a vote in its Industry Committee, gave strong support to the European Commission's proposals to reduce consumer roaming charges for sending text messages and downloading data in the EU. The Commission proposed in September 2008 to make sure that consumers in the EU do not have to pay more than €0.11 per roamed SMS in the EU (excluding VAT) - a proposal endorsed yesterday by the Parliament's lead Committee on the new roaming legislation. At present, SMS roaming charges in the EU are on average €0.28 per roamed SMS and can go up to over €0.80 in some countries.  more

Belgacom - Regulatory Intervention Takes the Shine off a Good Operational Performance

BelgacomÃ's Q3 financial report shows reduced revenues, reduced EBITDA and reduced profit, whether at the operating, pre-tax or after tax level. The 2.6% drop in revenue (to €1,473m) became -4.7% at the EBITDA line (€503m) and this continued on down the P&L, with operating profit 6.0% lower and pre-tax off 8.1% at €285m and €215m respectively.  more

European Commission Proposes New Cuts on Roaming SMS and Data Costs

European mobile phone users can expect the cost of sending text messages from abroad in the EU to be much cheaper next summer. The European Commission has proposed to reduce the price of roaming text messages by 60% as of 1 July 2009.  more

Regulatory Changes Could Drive 40 Million Europeans to Ditch their Mobile Phone

A report commissioned by Vodafone claims that some 40 million Europeans would ditch their mobile phone if US-style billing comes to the EU where a mobile phone user has to pay to receive phone calls. EU Voice Call Roaming Price Caps Come into Effect Next Week

At the end of this month, it will become cheaper to make or receive calls while travelling in the European Union (EU) as new regulatory price caps come into effect. These price reductions are the result of the EU Roaming Regulation, proposed by the European Commission in 2006 to curb the roaming charges consumers had to pay for roaming calls (on average €1.15 per minute at the time).  more

High Prices and Lack of Transparency Cause Anxiety for Data Roaming Users

Use of mobile data services within European countries is growing much faster than cross border data roaming services, concludes a study carried out for the European Commission. The report says that this is because mobile operators are introducing aggressive retail rates to compete with existing broadband offers.  more
