VivaCell-MTS Launches Video Ringtones
Armenian mobile network operator, vivacell-MTS has launched a video ringtone service, provided by Vringo and its partner, Innova Group. The service, to be rolled out on a subscription basis, will provide access to Vringo's video ringtone application and its library of 4,000-and-counting video ringtone clips. For a fee, subscribers may download this premium content. more

Orange Confirms Submitting Bid for Armenian Mobile License
France Telecom's mobile division, Orange says that it has submitted a bid for the 3rd mobile phone license in Armenia - valued at EUR51 million (US$70 million). ArmeniaĆ's Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) announced the tender in July and said that there will be a reserve price of US$16 million for the license and the winner will be required to invest a minimum of US$320 million in the network rollout. more

Base Stations Bring Electricity to Rural Villages
Three rural villages in Armenia's Gegarkunik region have been connected to the mains electricity supply - as a result of the mobile operator, vivacell-MTS requiring a power supply for its base stations in the region. vivacell ran high voltage power cables to its Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), and then ran extra power supplies to an electricity sub-station (power transformer) in each of the villages. more

Three Firms Shortlisted for Armenian Mobile License
Three companies, Orange, Tele2 and Ireland based Blackrock Communications have been shortlisted for Armenia's 3rd mobile operator license. A statement from the Transportation and Communication Ministry said that although 17 companies applied for the tender documents, only six companies submitted a bid, Orange, CEO Blackrock Communications, V-Tel, Tele2, Auroratel and PJ Engineering. more

Armenia to Offer a 3rd GSM License
Armenia is expected to launch a tender for the country's third GSM license this coming May - reports local newspaper, Panorama. The newspaper reports that the the tender details are still being confirmed, but will include spectrum in both the GSM900 and GSM1800 bands. more

MTS Russia - December 2007 Customer Numbers
Mobile TeleSystems, Russia's largest operator, registered 4.14m new connections in Q4 2007 to take its overall total to 85.77m. The fourth quarter total accounted for 43% of the annual total of 9.71m, the figures for the period being boosted by the recent acquisition of vivacell in Armenia. Again, December was the strongest month of the year with a total of 1.84m new customers - 19% of the annual total. more

MACH Extends Roaming Services Contract with Armenian Operator

ArmenTel Granted 3G License in Armenia
Russia's VimpleCom has announced that its Armenian subsidiary, ArmenTel have been granted a 3G license in Armenia. VimpleCom recently increased its holding in ArmenTel to 100%. The license covers the 1920-1935 MHz and 2110-2125 MHz bands. The company also recently lost its monopoly on providing landline services and new entrants are expected to be granted licenses later this month. more
