Virgin Mobile Tops UK Mobile Broadband Tests

The results are now available for the first Mobile Broadband Genie Road Trip Awards. The exercise directly pitted dongles provided by six of the UK's mobile broadband suppliers (O2, Orange, 3, T-mobile, virgin Media and Vodafone) against each other on a 350-mile rail journey over two days.  more

Virgin Trains to offer on-board Wi-Fi Service

T-Mobile UK and virgin Trains today announced the launch of Wi-Fi internet services for passengers on Pendolino virgin trains on the West Coast Main Line. The Wi-Fi HotSpot service will provide a wireless broadband connection throughout the entire journey, including all tunnel sections, at high speeds. The HotSpot service has been rolled out by T-Mobile's solution partner, Nomad Digital.  more

O2 Tops UK Mobile Broadband Service Report

A report on the UK mobile and fixed broadband market by J.D. Power has reported that O2 tops its rankings for both services - although a separate study by P3 Solutions had recently put T-Mobile at the top of the rankings for mobile broadband services, although only for download speeds.  more

UK Records Second Lowest Market Growth Ever

The UK mobile market saw annual growth drop 0.3pp year on year to 4.4%, the second lowest figure ever recorded. In real terms, annual net additions stood at 3.15m, down slightly on the 3.21m recorded in the prior twelve months. Quarterly net additions totalled 0.97m, taking the total connection base to 74.07m and penetration to 121.5% at the end of Q3.  more

No sign of wireless downturn in North America yet

North America was the first region to be affected by the current economic crisis and, to date, has been the hardest hit. Although the full effects of the downturn are yet to be felt, the wireless operators' results in the third quarter reflect how mobile services have become indispensable and two-year contracts are protecting the sector in the region. Mobile telecom remains on track to grow in the region in 2009.  more

UK Q2 '08 Market Update - Hutchison Tops for Quarterly Net Additions

Having seen its first net loss for over two years in Q1, the UK mobile market was back on course in Q2 with a net gain of 0.39m, slightly higher than the 0.38m recorded in Q2 07. The total customer base stood at 71.05m at the end of the quarter. Annual net additions totalled 3.34m, up from 3.23m a year earlier, while on a proportionate basis annual growth stood at 4.9%, just below the 5.0% recorded for the prior twelve month period.  more
