Virgin Trains to offer on-board Wi-Fi Service
T-Mobile UK and Virgin Trains today announced the launch of Wi-Fi internet services for passengers on Pendolino Virgin trains on the West Coast Main Line. The Wi-Fi HotSpot service will provide a wireless broadband connection throughout the entire journey, including all tunnel sections, at high speeds. The HotSpot service has been rolled out by T-Mobile's solution partner, Nomad Digital. more

UK to Expand GSM-R Service on Railways
The UK's national railway operator, Network Rail has announced plans to spend £24 million (US$33.8 million) fitting GSM-R based radios into the majority of the British train fleet over the next three years. more

Vodafone Warns About Indiscrete Public Conversations
Vodafone UK says that it has teamed up with rail operator, Virgin Trains to deliver improved mobile phone coverage within train carriages. The new 'repeater' technology, which retransmits 2G and 3G within carriages, will be installed on all 52 of Virgin's high speed Pendolino trains on the London to Glasgow route by November 2008 and has already improved the number of calls completed without interruption by around 60%. more

Orange UK Expands WiFI Coverage
UK network operator, Orange has signed a deal with WiFi provider, The Cloud to allow its subscribers to use the WiFi network as part of their mobile subscriber contract. Orange already has WiFi agreements in place with BT OpenZone, France Telecom and WeRoam. In the UK this latest agreement extends Orange's WiFi access to more than 10,000 hotspots. more

Nokia Top Commercial Brand in the UK
A survey by the UK brand consultancy, 35 Communications has reported a 10-ten of UK brands, which put Nokia at position 2 - and the top commercial brand-name. Nearly one third of UK consumers distrust organisations. 35 asked them if they lost their wallet would 'brand X' return it. While 58% thought they would have it returned, 27% said 'no' based on their perceived lack of trust or confidence in the organisation. more

Orange Improves Coverage Inside Train Carriages
Following a successful 12-month trial, Orange UK says that that it has extended its partnership with Virgin Trains and is working exclusively with the operator to improve onboard network coverage for mobile voice and data services. 18 Voyager trains have already been upgraded, but the solution will ultimately benefit passengers on all 78 trains operating on the Cross Country and North Wales routes. more

Testing Internet Services on Passenger Trains
QinetiQ Rail, part of the former UK national defence laboratory says that it has deployed a multi-bearer wireless Internet system on a fully operational train in the UK. A trial of QinetiQ Rail's Connected Carriage system is set to commence with Virgin Trains following its successful installation on a Pendolino train. more
