Five Firms Short-listed for Russian 3G Rollout

Russia's Megafon is reported to have short-listed five companies as suppliers for its US$1 billion 3G network rollout. Local tech publication, CNews names Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, NEC, Nokia-Siemens and Huawei as the five companies which have been invited to submit formal tenders.  more

ArmenTel Granted 3G License in Armenia

Russia's vimplecom has announced that its Armenian subsidiary, ArmenTel have been granted a 3G license in Armenia. vimplecom recently increased its holding in ArmenTel to 100%. The license covers the 1920-1935 MHz and 2110-2125 MHz bands. The company also recently lost its monopoly on providing landline services and new entrants are expected to be granted licenses later this month.  more

MegaFon Launches 3G Network in St. Petersburg

Russian operator, MegaFon is reported to have launched the first part of its 3G network, in St. Petersburg - while MTS and vimplecom are still testing their network deployment. A report in the RBC Daily newspaper said that the company plans to expand the network next year to all 16 regions.  more

Telenor Ups Pressure on Ukraine Operator Dispute

Following the ongoing shareholder dispute at the Ukrainian operator, Kyivstar - Telenor announced yesterday that it will deconsolidate Kyivstar and to present Telenor's interests in the company in one line, as an investment in the 2006 Annual Report. Telenor owns 56.5% of Kyivstar, and will still own the stake - it is just changing how it accounts for the stake in its financial statements. more

Alfa: Telenor Proposed Joint Purchase Of Ukraine Operator

MOSCOW (Dow Jones)--The telecoms arm of financial-industrial holding Alfa Group (ALFAGP.YY) received a proposal four to five months ago from Norway's Telenor ASA (TELN) for the two companies to purchase a small Ukrainian mobile operator, but rejected the offer, Alfa said Thursday.  more

Merger in Russian networks

The Russian investment bank, Alfa Group says that it has taken over a company that owns a 25% stake in the national GSM operator, MegaFon. The Alfa Group currently also controls the rival network, vimplecom through sharing over 50% of the company holdings with Norway's Telenor. This could presumably presage a merger between the two companies to create a rival to Russia's largest network operator (by subscriber numbers), MTS. more
