Russia's VimpelCom has announced that it has signed a Joint Venture and Shareholders Agreement to establish a mobile telecommunications joint venture in Vietnam under the name of GTEL-Mobile Joint Stock Company. The other participants in the Joint Venture Company will be Global Telecommunications Corporation ("GTEL"), a Vietnamese state-owned enterprise and GTEL TSC, a subsidiary of GTEL. more

Vietnam Needs More Mobile Phone Numbers
Vietnam's three mobile phone networks, VinaPhone, MobiFone and viettel, have asked the Ministry of Posts and Telematics (MPT) for more network codes. VinaPhone is now using two network codes, 091 and 094, MobiFone with two codes, 090 and 093, and viettel with 097 and 098. As the numbers of mobile subscribers are increasing, those networks have asked the MPT for two more network codes each. more

Competition in Vietnam Intensifying
Despite happiness with market share for 2005, competition in 2006 forecast to be fiercer than last year with two new mobile networks, EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom joining the fray. At a press conference in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province in late March 2006, Nguyen Huy Phuc, Deputy Head of the Telecommunications Department under the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) announced that VNPT, VinaPhone and MobiFone mobile networks have signed up more than 7.2 million subscribers between them. If they maintain these new subscriber-signing rates, the two networks could reach 10 million subscribers by the year's end. more
