Russia's Altimo to open representative office in Vietnam

Confusion Over Vietnams Subscriber Numbers

Vietnam's Ministry of Posts and Telematics (MPT) is designing common criteria to calculate the real numbers of subscribers across the five mobile phone networks says Vietnam Posts And Telecommunications Corp (VNPT). Three mobile phone service subscribers - VinaPhone, MobiFone and viettel - have been reporting increased numbers of subscribers every month, and viettel recently announced the signing of their four millionth subscriber. more

Vietnam Delays 3G

Ericsson to Expand Viettel's GSM Network in Vietnam

Ericsson has signed a GSM network expansion contract with Vietnam's viettel to extend its coverage in rural areas of Vietnam and increase its capacity in large metropolitan areas of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Danang. Under the contract, Ericsson will provide viettel with new core network nodes, radio base stations, and microwave transmission equipment. It also includes upgrades and expansions of functionality in the service layer such as charging and voicemail, as well as project management, integration and implementation services. more

Competition in Vietnam Intensifying

Despite happiness with market share for 2005, competition in 2006 forecast to be fiercer than last year with two new mobile networks, EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom joining the fray. At a press conference in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province in late March 2006, Nguyen Huy Phuc, Deputy Head of the Telecommunications Department under the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) announced that VNPT, VinaPhone and MobiFone mobile networks have signed up more than 7.2 million subscribers between them. If they maintain these new subscriber-signing rates, the two networks could reach 10 million subscribers by the year's end. more

Vietnamese Operators Plan Stock Floatation

Vietnam's VinaPhone and MobiFone plan to equitise and issue shares on the stock market before year's end, according to parent firm Viet Nam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT). VinaPhone assets, in terms of user subscriptions, reached US$1.6 billion by the end of 2005, while those of MobiFone stood at about $1 billion, said VNPT. MobiFone will complete formalities to put an end to ten years of cooperation with its foreign partner in 2006 to prepare for equitisation in 2007, said Le Ngoc Minh, Director of VMS MobiFone. "MobiFone's equitisation has attracted the attention of many investors, both local and international," Minh said. more

The Fight For Mobile Customers At Border Areas

Five years ago, residents in Vietnam's remote and border areas didn't even know what a mobile phone was. Now, cell phone networks cover almost all of these areas. The area around the Ban Thi Railway Station in the Van Thuy Commune in Chi Lang District in the northern province of Lang Son is thinly populated, but it is a hotbed of smuggled goods. Moreover, the national highway that runs through the village has numerous sharp twists and bends that often cause traffic accidents. "Therefore," according to Son, the head of the railway station, "mobile phones have become essential for local security staff." more

Ericsson Signs GSM Network Expansion Deal In Vietnam
