Despite Recession - US Smartphone Market Still Growing

According to The NPD Group, consumer sales of smartphones to U.S. consumers represented 23 percent of all handset sales in the fourth quarter (Q4) 2008 compared to just 12 percent in Q4 2007. Led by the release of Apple's iPhone 3G at $199, the average price for a smartphone fell 23 percent from $216 in Q4 2007 to $167 last year.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. US Wireless Growth Won't Be Stopped by Weak Economy

A Strategy Analytics report is predicting that US cellular subscriber growth will remain strong despite the economic situation, although growth levels will scale back slightly from 2008. Microsoft Wins Mobile Search Deal with Verizon

verizon Wireless has signed a deal with Microsoft to provide portal, local and Internet search as well as mobile advertising services to customers on its devices. The five-year agreement will go into effect in the first half of 2009 when Microsoft Live Search is targeted to be available on new verizon Wireless feature phones and smartphones.  more

Third of 3G iPhone Buyers Switched from Other Carriers to Join AT&T

According to a new report from The NPD Group, the leader in market research for the wireless industry, 30 percent of U.S. consumers who purchased Apple's new iPhone 3G from June through August 2008 switched from other mobile carriers to join AT&T, the exclusive mobile carrier for the iPhone in the U.S. By way of comparison just 23 percent of consumers, on average, switched carriers between June and August 2008. Nearly half (47%) of new AT&T iPhone customers that switched carriers switched from verizon Wireless, another 24 percent switched from T-Mobile, and 19 percent switched from Sprint.  more

Motorola Reported to be Working on a "Google Phone"

It has been reported that Motorola is ramping up development of mobile phones based on the Google backed Android Operating System. The company is understood to have 50 staff working on Android phones and is ramping up its team to 350 people.  more
