TAKING THE PULSE: The wireless business continues to hum for the U.S. telecommunications companies, but signs of competitive pressure are beginning to creep in. Wireless continues to be driven by smartphone sales and the adoption of pricier service plans, offsetting the deteriorating wireline business. AT&T remains at the forefront but eventually will lose its leadership position in wireless once verizon Communications completes its acquisition of Alltel. U.S. Mobile Phone Unit-Sales Declined 22% YoY in Q1
According to The NPD Group, mobile phone handset sales to consumers in the USA reached nearly 31 million units in the first quarter of 2008, which is a 22 percent decline since the same period a year ago. NPD estimates total first quarter 2008 consumer sales of nearly $2.7 billion, down from $2.9 billion a year ago. more
