Verizon Communications Quarterly Profit up 5.3%

verizon Communications has reported that its first-quarter revenues jumped 11.6 percent to US$26.6 billion, compared with the first quarter 2008 - largely thanks to the acquisition of Alltel earlier this year. Excluding the Alltel boost, revenues would have grown by 3.3 percent.  more

Verizon Announces LTE Deployment Plans - Going Live in 2010

verizon's CTO, Dick Lynch has outlined the company's plans to roll out an LTE upgrade for its wireless network. Lynch announced that verizon Wireless has selected Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as primary network vendors for its initial LTE network deployments. These two vendors are expected to build the underlying infrastructure that will enable verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010.  more

US Wireless Growth Won't Be Stopped by Weak Economy

A Strategy Analytics report is predicting that US cellular subscriber growth will remain strong despite the economic situation, although growth levels will scale back slightly from 2008. US cellular service revenues will also continue to grow, albeit at a slower growth rate of 3.9%, down from 7.5% in 2008.  more

GSMA Urges Latin American Regulators to Relax radio Spectrum Limits

Tight spectrum caps in some Latin American countries are artificially curbing uptake and usage of broadband in the region, according to a study by consultancy Arthur D Little (ADL) for the GSMA, the global trade group for the mobile industry. The study found that rigid restrictions on the amount of spectrum available to mobile operators are undermining their ability to provide mobile broadband services that would enable millions of people to access the Internet, email and other online services via computers and handsets at high speeds in areas lacking DSL or cable broadband connections.  more

Nortel's bankruptcy filing enables radical change, and not just at Nortel

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry structure for communications equipment.  more
