USA Saw Lowest Ever Annual Subscriber Growth in 2008
Although the American market did not suffer quite so badly as the Canadian market in the fourth quarter, it did see a disappointing figure for net additions. The quarterly gain of 4.15m represented the lowest increase since 2002, and it was 58% lower than the 6.55m recorded in Q4 07. The total market reached 271m customers, equivalent to a penetration rate of 88.8%. Meanwhile, the inexorable decline in annual growth continued: 2008 saw an uplift of just 6.1%, the lowest figure ever recorded in the market in more than 25 years of service. more

The US market has undergone some consolidation recently, but there remain seven operators with between 250k and 10m subscribers. Qwest, which recently started selling Verizon Wireless plans having terminated its contract with Sprint, had 0.81m at the end of the quarter. The Fastest Growing Operators in North America
The North American market had a particularly quiet quarter, with fewer than 6m new customers in all on a net basis. In this kind of environment, it is most unlikely that there would be any changes in the list of the largest operators, but the unlikely did in fact happen, with Bell Mobility dropping one place down the rankings from seventh to eighth. This was hardly a major change: it lost five thousand customers in the quarter and US Cellular, which had been breathing down its neck, added 16,000, to move ahead of its Canadian counterpart for the first time. The chart below shows the new pecking order, which is unchanged in all other respects. more
