Verizon Wireless Tests LTE in Boston, Seattle
Verizon Wireless says that it has completed its first successful Long Term Evolution (LTE) data calls in Boston and Seattle - based on the 3GPP Release 8 standard. The successful data calls involved streaming video, file uploads and downloads, and Web browsing. Significantly, Verizon Wireless has successfully made data calls using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to enable voice transmissions over the LTE 4G network. more

Verizon Wireless Selects Gemalto to Provide OTA and UICC for LTE Network
Gemalto has won a contract from Verizon Wireless to provide an over-the-air (OTA) platform and LTE Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) for the operator's LTE network upgrade. The UICC will be used inside mobile devices to manage subscriber information exchange – such as transferring contacts and preferences from one device to another – while providing secure access to Verizon Wireless' LTE network. more

Verizon Communications Quarterly Profit up 5.3%
Verizon Communications has reported that its first-quarter revenues jumped 11.6 percent to US$26.6 billion, compared with the first quarter 2008 - largely thanks to the acquisition of Alltel earlier this year. Excluding the Alltel boost, revenues would have grown by 3.3 percent. more

Verizon Wireless Reported to be in Talks for CDMA Based iPhone
Verizon is reported to be in advanced talks with Apple to launch a CDMA version of the iPhone handset. The mobile network operator entered into "high-level" discussions with Apple management a few months ago, when CEO Steve Jobs was overseeing day-to-day business, sources told USA Today. The sources declined to be named because they aren't authorized to speak publicly. more

USA Saw Lowest Ever Annual Subscriber Growth in 2008
Although the American market did not suffer quite so badly as the Canadian market in the fourth quarter, it did see a disappointing figure for net additions. The quarterly gain of 4.15m represented the lowest increase since 2002, and it was 58% lower than the 6.55m recorded in Q4 07. The total market reached 271m customers, equivalent to a penetration rate of 88.8%. Meanwhile, the inexorable decline in annual growth continued: 2008 saw an uplift of just 6.1%, the lowest figure ever recorded in the market in more than 25 years of service. more

Shareholders Pushing for Sale of US Cellular to Larger Rival
Further consolidation in the USA's telecoms market could be imminent as shareholders are reported to be pressuring U.S. Cellular to seek a buy-out from one of its larger rivals. The company is 81% controlled by Telephone & Data Systems (TDS), which is itself facing pressure from several large shareholders to put itself up for sale. more

Ericsson Rumoured to have Won $2 Billion Deal from Sprint Nextel
Ericsson is reported to have won a huge US$2 billion service contract from US operator, Sprint Nextel. Citing sources, the business news magazine, Affarsvarlden said the contract is said to be a surprise considering that Ericsson no long supports the CDMA technology used by Sprint Nextel. The complex integration with the Motorola supplied iDEN network can only add to the headaches, although any deal could lead to speculation that Motorola might try to offload their entire iDEN platform to Ericsson. more
