3G Subscriptions to Reach 285 Million Worldwide by the end of 2006
After years of market uncertainty, with investors wringing their hands and restructuring their finances, 3G has finally gained credibility. "3G subscriptions, including CDMA2000, are forecast to hit 285 million by the end of 2006," says ABI Research's Asia-Pacific director, Jake Saunders. He goes on to say that, "Operators' overall capital expenditure will grow for the fourth year to reach $126.4 billion, and annual 3G-related handset shipments should pull past 300 million." more

Nigerian Operator Doubling Network Capacity
Mtel, the Mobile subsidiary of Nigeria's state owned telecommunications outfit, has unveiled plans to increase the capacity of the network by an additional two and half million lines, a more than 200% increase on the existing 1.2 million lines capacity. The lines will be in place in the next six months. The Board of Mtel, with Nigeria's Communication Minister Chief Cornelius Adebayo as Chairman, approved the "network augmentation" programme, involving vendor financing in September 2005. The vendors are Ericcson, Huawei, ZTE, Motorola, Nokia and Siemens. more

Telsim steps up lawsuit pressure
Telsim, Turkey's second largest mobile phone company, has urged Motorola and Nokia to participate in arbitration proceedings in Switzerland in order to settle the ongoing commercial disputes between the companies. Telsim says that the vendor financing agreements between Telsim and Motorola and Nokia expressly provide that disputes between the parties would only and exclusively be resolved through arbitration under Swiss law. Arbitration proceedings, which were originally started in 2001 and 2002, were renewed last month when the Swiss Arbrital Tribunal dismissed Motorola's motion to stay these proceedings. more

Racketeering claims against Turkish network dismissed
Telsim, Turkey's second largest mobile phone company, says that it welcomed a decision by a U.S. District Court Judge, the Honorable Jed S. Rakoff, to dismiss RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) claims filed on behalf of Motorola and Nokia against the Uzan family, owners of Telsim. Judge Rakoff's order follows an earlier decision by a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, to dismiss all RICO claims brought against the Uzan family. more
