Belarusian network announces expansion program
The Belarus based, velcom has said that by the end of this year, the company is planning to invest US$50 million in improving its network, and the same amount to invest in the first half 2003 year. Therefore the total volume of velcom investments will come to US$200 million by the middle of 2003, double the original investment program. more

Velcom issues interconnection dispute statement
The Belarus based network, velcom has issued a statement to clarify its position on the interconnection dispute between itself and the new entrant, MTS. velcom says that MTS did not appeal to the Ministry of Communications, as stipulated by Legislation, with the project of the coordinated agreement about interactions and mutual accounts of the both operators. velcom also says that there was a lack of correspondence between MTS and itself when organising the interconnection. more

The incumbent GSM network operator in Belarus, velcom has cut its interconnection with the new entrant, MTS, just one week after MTS launched its service in the country. At the moment, customers on each network cannot phone each other. more

Ericsson wins Belarus GSM contract
Ericsson's Croatian operation, Ericsson Nikola Tesla has signed a US$15.1 million contract to expand the GSM network in Belarus. The contract, with the incumbent network, velcom will also add GPRS to the network and work should be completed by the end of this year. more

Belarus offers second GSM license
The Belarus Telecoms Ministry has announced a tender for a second GSM license with a closing date of August 2, 2001. There will be a fixed fee of US$5 million for the license and the award will be by the beauty contest method. The new license holder will not be allowed to start commercial operations until April 2002 however, as the incumbent GSM network, velcom has exclusivity in the market until then." more

Belarus plans second GSM network
The Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has instructed his Communications Ministry officials to prepare to license a second GSM network - or face the sack. There is just one GSM network in the country, velcom and handsets cost an average of US$200, while monthly salaries rarely exceed US$50, so it is intended that competition will lower prices. Speaking at his annual address to Parliament, Lukashenko said "They have set such high prices for mobile communications that even rich people do not want them". velcom is 51% owned by the state controlled land-line monopoly, Beltelecom and 49% by the Swiss group, SB Telecom." more
