Combination ICs – Understanding the Needs of Tomorrow - Today
The inclusion of multiple wireless technologies on a single IC is becoming increasingly widespread. As the drive for reduced power consumption, additional functionality and significant cost reduction reaches a crescendo, it has never been a more exciting time for combination ICs. Broadcom's recently announced 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and FM combination (which follows the company's intent to introduce a new combination IC every 60 days over the coming months), has ensured this issue remains a hot topic. more

Bluetooth “Partnerships†Will Make it a Connectivity Swiss Army Knife
Two clever enhancements now in development will allow the ubiquitous - but slow - Bluetooth wireless technology to handle much larger amounts of data at much higher speeds. This will significantly increase Bluetooth's usefulness, making it a kind of multi-purpose "Swiss Army Knife" among protocols, and entrenching its already strong position in portable electronics. more

Consumer Awareness of Bluetooth At An All Time High
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has more to celebrate this week than just the 10th anniversary of its launch. According to an annual survey conducted by research firm Millward Brown, global awareness of Bluetooth technology is at an all time high with 85 percent of consumers recognizing the wireless technology. This is the fifth consecutive year awareness of Bluetooth technology has climbed, according to the annual survey conducted by research firm Millward Brown. more

UWB to Have a Profound Impact on Future Mobile Device Communications
Wireless USB, based on the WiMedia Alliance's Ultrawideband (uwb) common radio platform which is promoted by USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), is slowly garnering attention from mobile device manufacturers as it has exhibited efficient power consumption. It is capable of transmitting data up to 480 Mbps at distances up to 3 meters and 110 Mbps at up to 10 meters. It is gradually being implemented in game controllers, digital cameras, portable media players (PMPs), and laptops. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has also announced that the next version of Bluetooth would be based on Wimedia's uwb common radio platform. more

As Bluetooth Supports 802.11, Questions Loom About UWB
Members of the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) announced the development of Bluetooth over 802.11, giving Bluetooth a boost in data rate transfer and helping to quench consumer demand for added speed. Consequently, the uwb (Ultra-Wideband) market worries that this announcement may slow down or even suspend its relationship with Bluetooth; but ABI Research does not believe this will be the case. more
