Ultra-Wideband Prepares Itself for the Mobile Phone Market
According to a new report from IMS Research, uwb is forecast to penetrate this market in low volume in 2007 and rise to a penetration rate of around 20% by 2011. The report reveals that Wireless USB is predicted to be the first PAL to market, taking an early lead while uwb/Bluetooth draft specifications are finalised. By 2011 Bluetooth over uwb is expected to take the lead in this market. However, multiple protocol layers are expected to prevail in this product. more

Ultrawideband Shipments to Reach Nearly 300 Million in 2011
Several formidable-looking barriers appear, at first glance, to pose serious obstacles to widespread commercial success for Ultrawideband (uwb). But closer examination reveals that few of them will drastically inhibit the market, which a new ABI Research study forecasts will see nearly 300 million uwb shipments in 2011. more

Bluetooth Market to Exceed 500 Million Radios in 2006
After an explosive year of growth in 2005 that has seen the Bluetooth market more than double, 2006 looks set to provide another healthy year of profits for Bluetooth vendors. In its new study, ABI Research concludes that the market for Bluetooth radios will grow by 71% to a level just over 500 million radio shipments in 2006. Stuart Carlaw, Principal Analyst, Wireless Connectivity, notes, "This growth will be attributed to extremely robust attach rate gains in the cellular handset market as well as a continuation of the explosive growth in the headset market." more

UltraWideband Interoperability Testing Sucessful
uwb silicon providers - Alereon, Staccato Communications and Wisair have announced their initial attempts at interoperability were successful. At TDK Test Services, the three companies performed interoperability testing of their pre-production PHY silicon to confirm support for multiple packet types over all the mandatory data rates of the WiMedia specification. The interoperability activities began in February 2005 amongst the companies known to have working silicon at the time, with the exchanging of test vectors to validate both the WiMedia uwb PHY and MAC specifications and to ensure future product interoperability. more

Motorola versus the Rest of the World
The possibility of obtaining consensus on a single Ultrawideband (uwb) standard for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) has disappeared, notes ABI Research. There are two standards on the table, one proposed by Motorola and a couple others, and the other proposed by nearly all the remaining industry heavyweights, including Intel, Texas Instruments, Philips, Microsoft, Fujitsu, NEC, Hewlett Packard, Infineon, and STMicroelectronics. more
