China Orders Shut-Down of PHS Mobile Phone Networks
China Telecom and China Unicom have been ordered to shut down their low-cost XiaoLingTong mobile telephone system in order to free up the radio spectrum for 3G services. The two companies have been given three years to shut down the networks. more

China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks
It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-SCDMA network. more

Panasonic signs 3G joint venture
utstarcom and Panasonic Mobile have announced the creation of a joint venture company to focus on design, development, and manufacturing of 3G telecommunications system equipment. The joint company, Universal Communications Technology Hangzhou (UCTH), will first focus on providing comprehensive radio access solutions for a wide range of 3G mobile communications systems in China, and later expand into other international markets. more

UTStarcom to develop Chinese 3G system
utstarcom has extended its partnership with China's Datang Mobile to include the development and promotion China's homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G standard. The partnership between utstarcom and Datang, which began in early 2000, will provide a complete 3GPP R4 compliant end-to-end TD-SCDMA solution, using utstarcom's IP-based core network, Datang's base stations and a co-developed radio access network. more
