China Orders Shut-Down of PHS Mobile Phone Networks
China Telecom and China Unicom have been ordered to shut down their low-cost XiaoLingTong mobile telephone system in order to free up the radio spectrum for 3G services. The two companies have been given three years to shut down the networks. more

China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks
It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-SCDMA network. more

Dual GSM-CDMA Handset Launched
utstarcom has unveiled a dual-mode, dual-standby CDMA/GSM handset, the T66 and also announced that China Unicom has signed a contract to start selling the handsets. The CDMA and GSM modes of the T66 handset is designed to be able to stand by simultaneously, which can enable users to choose either mode at any time to make a phone call or send a short message. The original World Wind dual-mode phones could support either CDMA or GSM at any one time, but could not support both simultaneously. more

UTStarcom Wins Vietnamese CDMA Handset Contract
utstarcom has won a contract to supply its C1161 CDMA 1x handsets to S-Fone, a nationwide CDMA service provider based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. S-Fone is the sixth operator in 2005 to offer utstarcom-designed and -manufactured handsets, joining Sprint PCS in the United States, China Unicom in China, City Cell (Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited) in Bangladesh, Smartcom in Chile and Iusacell in Mexico. more

Local wireless network expands in China
utstarcom has signed infrastructure contracts valued at approximately US$67 million with China Netcom to expand the operator's existing IP-based PAS (Personal Access System) networks in the Heilongjiang, Liaoning, and Shandong provinces; Inner Mongolia; and metropolitan Beijing. more
