Ten mobile phone vendors are being sued for allegedly infringing patents relating to internal antennas used on their handsets. Spanish antenna manufacturer, Fractus says that is has sued Samsung, LG, RIM, Pantech, Kyocera, Palm, HTC, Sharp, utstarcom, and Sanyo for infringing nine different patents. more

China Orders Shut-Down of PHS Mobile Phone Networks
China Telecom and China Unicom have been ordered to shut down their low-cost XiaoLingTong mobile telephone system in order to free up the radio spectrum for 3G services. The two companies have been given three years to shut down the networks. more

UTStarcom to Close Korean Handset Factory
utstarcom has announced plans to close its Korean handset factory over the next six months to enable the company to meet current customer commitments in North America and the process will be complete by July 2009. China to Allocate Additional Spectrum to 3G Networks
It has been reported that China is planning to allocate additional radio spectrum to the homegrown 3G service, by taking it from the low-cost XiaoLingTong local area wireless service. Xie Feipo, from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that the ministry had asked fixed-line operators to return the PHS radio spectrum so it could be reassigned to the TD-SCDMA network. more

UTStarcom Sells Mobile Phone Division to Private Equity Investors
utstarcom has announced plans to sell its mobile phone division - Personal Communications Division ("PCD") to a newly formed entity controlled by AIG Vantage Capital, a part of AIG Investments. The expected proceeds of approximately US$240 million will be based primarily on the net working capital levels, subject to certain adjustments. In addition to the cash consideration, utstarcom could also receive up to US$50 million based on a three-year earn out provision. more
UTStarcom Gets New CEO - Sells IP-CDMA Division
utstarcom has reached an agreement to divest its Mobile Solutions Business Unit (MSBU). The MSBU, which primarily consists of the IP-CDMA business, will be acquired by the global private equity firm OpenGate Capital. utstarcom will retain the PDSN operations and will work with Star Solutions as an OEM provider. The financial terms of the transaction were not announced. more
Motorola Wins Taiwanese WiMAX Contract
Motorola has announced today that its local partner utstarcom is working with Taiwan based First International Telecom (Fitel) to deploy a WiMAX network as a part of the operatorÃ's commitment to the M-Taiwan project. Fitel received its operator license to provide WiMAX services for northern Taiwan in July 2007. It is MotorolaÃ's third WiMAX project secured in Taiwan in the last eight months. more
