Malaysia's Celcom Orders USSD Based Mobile Money Service

Malaysian mobile network operator, Celcom has ordered a mobile money service based on ussd (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) from Sybase 365. ussd is an 'instant messaging type' phone service with quick response times. ussd is similar to SMS, but unlike SMS, ussd transactions occur only during the session and have no store-and-forward capability.  more

Mobile Payment Users Worldwide to Increase 70 Percent in 2009

The mobile payment industry will experience steady growth, as the number of mobile payment users worldwide will total 73.4 million in 2009, up 70.4 percent from 2008 when there were 43.1 million users, reports Gartner. The research firm predicts that the number of mobile payment users will reach more than 190 million in 2012, representing more than 3 percent of total mobile users worldwide and attaining a level at which it will be considered "mainstream."  more

Qtel Offers Reverse Charged Calls

Qtel (Qatar Telecom), has launched a "Nobill Collect Call" service which enables Qtel’s subscribers to make collect calls to other mobile customers if they run out of credit, or if they are reluctant to place a call. The software platform was supplied by Symsoft.  more

Grameenphone Launches Reverse-Charged Calls in Bangladesh

Bangladesh's Grameenphone has launched a reverse-charge service which is aimed at PrePay tariff users who have run out of credit and need to contact a person who is also on the Grameenphone network. The Sicap provided software tool uses cost-free ussd string requests. Called "Pay4Me", it allows prepaid subscribers to initiate reverse charging calls with pre or post-paid friends when they temporarily run-out of credit.  more

Moldovan Operator Stops Sending Bills to Fantasy Subscribers

Digicel Launches Network in Samoa

Redknee says that it is expanding its partnership with Digicel Pacific in the South Pacific and a sister company to Digicel Group in the Caribbean and Central America. Digicel Samoa, which launched services yesterday, will use the Redknee solutions to provide mobile users in Samoa with wireless services and expand its current subscriber base. Digicel Pacific also has a license to operate a GSM network in Papua New Guinea, and was granted a license in principal from the government of Fiji in April 2006, as well as an experimental license in the Solomon Islands. more

Swiss Purchase of French Software Firm

Sicap, a subsidiary of Swisscom Mobile has acquired the French software developer, Swapcom. The acquisition will strengthen Sicap's position in the market as leader in the Mobile Device Management (MDM) space and extend the global offer to include solutions which facilitate business between operators and value-added service providers. Sicap and Swapcom have a total of 190 employees and achieve an annual turnover of about CHF 66 million. more
