Cost of Supporting Mobile Broadband is Eroding Subscriber Profitability

Mobile broadband services are more expensive to support than any other wireless service and are endangering subscriber profitability for many mobile network operators concludes a new study from WDSGlobal. The study found that the cost to support mobile broadband products and services is up to 200% greater than the cost to support traditional wireless products such as mobile phones. This means that despite revenue uplift from increased data usage, actual subscriber profitability often remains unchanged and sometimes even worsens.  more

LTE Deployments will Cluster in 2600 Frequency Band

Strategy Analytics is predicting that the majority of LTE deployments by wireless operators will use the 2,600 MHz band, creating ample new opportunities for terminal component vendors. A strong tranche of deployments will also occur at sub-1,000 MHz frequencies, including roll-outs by such prominent operators as Verizon in the US, eventually accounting for one-third of deployments globally.  more

'Sleep talking' PCs save energy and money

Personal computers may soon save large amounts of energy by "sleep talking." Computer scientists at UC San Diego and Microsoft Research have created a plug-and-play hardware prototype for personal computers that induces a new energy saving state known as "sleep talking." Normally PCs can be in either awake mode - where they consume power even if they are not being used, or in a low power sleep mode - where they save substantial power but are essentially inactive and unresponsive to network traffic. The new sleep talking state provides much of the energy savings of sleep mode and some of the network-and-Internet-connected convenience of awake mode.  more
