China's ZTE has set itself the daunting target of becoming on of the world's top five mobile phone vendors within the next three years. The company is currently ranked 6th in the world. UK Consumers Using More Communication Services - but Paying Less
People in the UK are spending more time using communications services than ever before - but paying less for them, according to the annual report from the UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom. The report shows that in 2007 Brits spent an average of 7 hours and 9 minutes a day using an array of communications services - up by 6 minutes from 2002. This includes watching television, surfing the net, using mobiles, talking on a landline phone and listening to the radio. more

With increasing use of laptops and mobile usb dongles to connect to the internet, a survey has found that the vast majority of laptop users are worried about bystanders looking at their computer screens. A recent poll by Hypertec, a supplier of memory, storage and personal workspace solutions has found that 70 per cent of mobile workers worry about commuters viewing private work whilst travelling on a train. Sixteen percent of respondents stated that fellow passengers often look at their screen, whilst 40 percent stated that they would simply not work on busy trains because of the potential risk. more

LTE Subscribers: From Zero to 32 Million in Three Years
Despite the fact that no LTE (Long Term Evolution) network is expected to be commercial before 2010, a new study from ABI Research forecasts that by 2013, there will be more than 32 million subscribers using LTE networks. Up to 12% of DSL Broadband Users to Transfer to Fixed WiMAX Within 5 Years
A new analysis of the global opportunity for WiMAX 802.16e forecasts that up to 12% of the global DSL installed base will be substituted by WiMAX by 2013. The Far East will lead with over one fifth of the 47m subscribers in 2013. more

Motorola Wins Mexican WiMAX Supply Contract
Motorola has won a supply contract with Mexico's Axtel, a fixed-line integrated telecommunications company. Axtel will purchase from Motorola equipment to install 802.16e WiMAX radiobase stations (access points), voice and data customer premise equipment, or CPE's, and PCMCIA cards. Indoor CPE's with wi-fi functionality and usb dongles will also be available for WiMAX. Laptops, PDA's and handsets with WiMAX embedded chipsets should be available by the end of this year or beginning 2009. more

Nortel to Start Selling WiMAX Consumer Products
Nortel says that it plans to start direct sales of WiMAX-enabled devices. The Company intends to offer its service provider customers devices such as PC express cards and usb dongles for WiMAX connectivity on laptops, as well as indoor routers and outdoor gateways for WiMAX to the home or business. more
