Huawei Sells 1.2 Million Mobile Broadband Modems to Telenor

Huawei says that it has inked a contract with Telenor Group to supply 1.2 million mobile broadband modems over the coming 12 months for Telenor's 13 operating companies. Earlier this month, Telenor has also signed a contract with ZTE for "up to" two million mobile broadband modems.  more

Telenor to Ship ZTE Supplied USB Modems

Telenor has inked a deal with ZTE to buy up to two million USB modems over the next twelve months. The deal covers Telenor's 13 operating companies in countries including Denmark, Hungary, Malaysia, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Sweden and Ukraine.  more

Telstra Upgrades Mobile Data Speeds

Australian network operator, Telstra has upgraded its Ericsson supplied network to support peak network uplink speeds of 5.8Mbps. Michael Rocca, Group Managing Director, Telstra Networks & Services, said the increased uplink speeds complement the world leading download speeds available in the network since the deployment of HSPA+ technology across the Next G network footprint late last year.  more

India Passes 100 Million CDMA Subscriber Landmark

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) says that there are now over 100 million CDMA subscribers in India, making it the world’s second-largest CDMA market. Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices are placed among the top five CDMA operators globally, ranking second and fourth, respectively.  more

LTE Deployments will Cluster in 2600 Frequency Band

Strategy Analytics is predicting that the majority of LTE deployments by wireless operators will use the 2,600 MHz band, creating ample new opportunities for terminal component vendors. A strong tranche of deployments will also occur at sub-1,000 MHz frequencies, including roll-outs by such prominent operators as Verizon in the US, eventually accounting for one-third of deployments globally.  more

Cellular Modem Shipments Exceeded 35 Million in 2008

Shipment data for the cellular modems used to connect laptops and netbooks to the Internet indicate that more than 35 million of the devices hit the market in 2008. Of that total, the majority were the external USB modems that mobile operators have been pushing for some time. Continued growth has been bolstered as mobile operators have bundled USB modems with netbooks in attractively subsidized price plans.  more

Sierra Wireless Launches HSPA+ USB Modems

Sierra Wireless has launched its first mobile broadband USB modems for HSPA+ networks. The new modems nearly triple the speed of other mobile broadband devices, with peak download speeds of 21Mbps. The Sierra Wireless USB 306 and USB 307 modems are expected to ship within the first half of this year.  more

2008 was a banner year for the cellular modem market, as many operators aggressively beefed up their 3G data service offerings. Embedded 3G laptops over-hyped: Will account for just 30% of Mobile Broadband subscribers by 2011

The near-term importance of new embedded-3G and embedded-WiMAX notebooks has been significantly over-estimated, according to a new research report published by Disruptive Analysis. Even in three year's time, laptops with built-in wireless access will only be used by 30% of total, active mobile broadband subscribers globally. External USB modems (or "dongles") will account for 58% - almost twice as many.  more

Huawei Adds Windows 7 Support to USB Modems

Huawei has unveiled a new portfolio of mobile broadband solutions that are Windows 7 compatible. The centrepiece among this new suite of solutions is a notebook-embedded 3G module that supports Microsoft Windows 7 - HuaweiÃ's EM770. The EM770 3G module delivers uplink speeds of 5.76Mbps and it has already been integrated into notebooks manufactured by ASUSTek Computer and Elitegroup Computer Systems.  more
