UK Consumers Using More Communication Services - but Paying Less
People in the UK are spending more time using communications services than ever before - but paying less for them, according to the annual report from the UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom. The report shows that in 2007 Brits spent an average of 7 hours and 9 minutes a day using an array of communications services - up by 6 minutes from 2002. This includes watching television, surfing the net, using mobiles, talking on a landline phone and listening to the radio. more

Telecom New Zealand Full Year Profits Drop 15.5%
Telecom New Zealand has reported an annual profit of NZ$713 million (US$512 million), down 15.5 per cent from NZ$844 million (US$606 million) a year ago. The company reported though that revenue for the year was $5,673 million (US$4.07 billion), a 2% increase on the prior year, while expenses rose 5% to $3,782 million (US$2.7 billion), in part reflecting the costs of transformation and operational separation. This resulted in a 4% decline in EBITDA. more

Aggressive marketing and pricing strategies from mobile operators will significantly impact the fixed-line business; 17 million new customers will forgo fixed line broadband to sign up to the mobile broadband services and a further 9 million existing fixed line broadband customers will terminate their contracts to take advantage of the cheaper mobile broadband alternative. more

Increasing Deployment of UMT at 900Mhz
The pace of commercialisation of UMTS 900 systems has quickened, according to a new Information Paper published by GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association. The report notes that for the same service offering and coverage, the number of base station sites in the 900 MHz band can be reduced by 60% compared to that needed for 2100 MHz, and reduce rollout time. more
