UK operator, Hutchison 3G UK (3 UK) is to start offering advertising on the welcome page that greets its 3G modem users. Mobily Upgrades 40 More Saudi 3G Base Stations

Saudi Arabia's Mobily says that it has upgraded 40 more of its base stations in the Eastern Region to support higher mobile data speeds. The upgrades included sites in Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran and the Jubail Industrial City and the Dammam Port, as well as the towns of Sihat, Qatif and Kalabia in Ahsaa.  more

Cost of Supporting Mobile Broadband is Eroding Subscriber Profitability

Mobile broadband services are more expensive to support than any other wireless service and are endangering subscriber profitability for many mobile network operators concludes a new study from WDSGlobal. The study found that the cost to support mobile broadband products and services is up to 200% greater than the cost to support traditional wireless products such as mobile phones. This means that despite revenue uplift from increased data usage, actual subscriber profitability often remains unchanged and sometimes even worsens.  more

LTE Deployments will Cluster in 2600 Frequency Band

Strategy Analytics is predicting that the majority of LTE deployments by wireless operators will use the 2,600 MHz band, creating ample new opportunities for terminal component vendors. A strong tranche of deployments will also occur at sub-1,000 MHz frequencies, including roll-outs by such prominent operators as Verizon in the US, eventually accounting for one-third of deployments globally.  more

Telefonica Conducts 1st Tests of LTE Network in Spain

Spain's Telefónica has conducted its first tests on a live LTE network, installed at its Demonstrations Centre in Madrid. These initial real demonstrations or tests consisted of a VoIP call, and a videocall using an LTE mini-network installed by Ericsson; a video conference, and data and images downloads at speeds in excess of 140 Mbps, around 10 times those possible with current 3G networks using HSPA technology.  more

Sprint Outlines WiMAX Expansion Programme

USA network, Sprint Nextel has announced the next markets in its WiMAX network rollout. The network is being folded into the national WiMAX network being built by its joint-partner, Clearwire. Sprint says that it plans to deploy WiMAX in many markets in 2009, including: Atlanta, Honolulu, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Chicago, Philadelphia, DallasFort Worth, Portland and Seattle  more

BSNL To Start Selling 3G USB Modems

Indian mobile phone manufacturer, Micromax says that it has secured a distribution deal with state-owned mobile network operator, BSNL for its 3G USB Modems. BSNL is currently rolling out its 3G network, and currently covers 11 cities - with the intention to cover approx 700 cities in the next 2-3 months.  more

Cellular Modem Shipments Exceeded 35 Million in 2008

Shipment data for the cellular modems used to connect laptops and netbooks to the Internet indicate that more than 35 million of the devices hit the market in 2008. Of that total, the majority were the external USB modems that mobile operators have been pushing for some time. Continued growth has been bolstered as mobile operators have bundled USB modems with netbooks in attractively subsidized price plans.  more

Sierra Wireless Launches HSPA+ USB Modems

Sierra Wireless has launched its first mobile broadband USB modems for HSPA+ networks. The new modems nearly triple the speed of other mobile broadband devices, with peak download speeds of 21Mbps. The Sierra Wireless USB 306 and USB 307 modems are expected to ship within the first half of this year.  more
