Mobile number portability confirmed for the USA
A court hearing has upheld a requirement for the US cellular network operators to introduce mobile number portability by this November. Verizon Wireless and the local trade association, the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) had taken the telecoms regulator to court in an attempt to block the move on the grounds that the regulator had oversteped its authority. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected the appeal. more

US cell phone market to grow at 6% per year - report
Strategy Analytics has issued a new report, which has concluded that the US cellular subscriber market will grow at a compound annual rate of 6% over the next five years resulting in penetration approaching 70%. Wireless minutes sold will double to 1.6 trillion, while operator service revenues will approach US$133 billion.

Cell phone usage costs continue to fall
The cost of using a cell phone in the USA declined 4.0% in November, according to the consultants Econ One. The decline in November followed a 1.4% price reduction reported in October. Cost reductions by several of the major national carriers were responsible for the sizable cost decline in November. The overall cost decline from the previous month amounted to US$1.50. Cost declines were witnessed in all of the Top 25 markets. more

CDMA Development Group (CDG) has held a webcast that revealed that CDMA technology reached more than 117 million subscribers, including 3.5 million CDMA2000 users on eight commercial networks at the end of last year. Other milestones from 2001 include the recognition of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution Data-Only) as part of the IMT-2000 standard by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU); advancement of 1xEV-DV (Evolution Data-Voice) by 3GPP2; development of standards for all-IP core networks; launch of new 3G applications; and completion of the CDMA user identity module (UIM) standard. more
