U.S. Cellular Reports Second Quarter Customer Results
United States Cellular has announced that it lost 32,000 postpay customers and 27,000 prepaid customers in the second quarter, for a net loss of 59,000 retail customers. For the six months ended June 30, 2009, the company added 28,000 postpay customers and lost 24,000 prepaid customers, for a net addition of 4,000 retail customers. more

MetroPCS Q1 2009 Results - A record quarter with 683k adds
MetroPCS has produced another strong set of operating results for its first quarter of the 2009 financial year. It added a further 683k accounts to take its total to 6.05m. Another quarter or two like this and it will surely overtake US Cellular to become the fifth largest operator in the States. The chart shows the company's recent quarterly additions and its share of the US total net adds. That the company took nearly 16% of all new connections in Q1 will be a cause of some concern to its larger rivals – especially when it is remembered that it did this despite the fact that its total footprint only covers 83m of the 300m population. more

USA's MetroPCS Looks Set to Overtake US Cellular
In Q4 08, the remaining seven US operators with between 0.25m and 10m customers collectively recorded their best quarter since Q1 07, adding 0.87m customers to finish the year with an aggregate total of 18.20m. However, this gain was entirely attributable to budget networks Leap Wireless and MetroPCS, with the other five recording a net loss to their aggregated customer base. MetroPCS, the second largest of the seven, added a record 0.52m customers to finish on 5.37m, while Leap scored its second best ever figure of 0.38m to finish on 3.84m. more

US Wireless Growth Won't Be Stopped by Weak Economy
A Strategy Analytics report is predicting that US cellular subscriber growth will remain strong despite the economic situation, although growth levels will scale back slightly from 2008. US cellular service revenues will also continue to grow, albeit at a slower growth rate of 3.9%, down from 7.5% in 2008. more

US Small Operators Q2 - Customer Growth Falls but Mixed Results for ARPU
The US market has undergone some consolidation recently, but there remain seven operators with between 250k and 10m subscribers. The largest of these is US Cellular, which finished Q2 08 with 6.19m subscribers. Three others had more than 1m customers: MetroPCS (4.60m), Leap (3.31m) and Centennial (1.09m). Qwest, which recently started selling Verizon Wireless plans having terminated its contract with Sprint, had 0.81m at the end of the quarter. Finally, regional players Cincinnati Bell and Ntelos had 0.58m and 0.43m respectively. more

USA's Smaller Operators - MetroPCS and Leap Leading the Chasing Pack
At the end of Q1 2008, the combined customer base of the six small US operators (Cincinnati Bell, Leap Wireless, MetroPCS, Ntelos, Qwest and US Cellular) was 15.53m, up from 13.66m a year earlier. This is equivalent to an annual growth rate of 13.6%. This is below the growth rates posted by T- Mobile (18.4%) and AT&T (14.7%) for the 12 months ended 31st March 2008, although it is higher than the 10.6% recorded by Verizon and much better than the -0.6% Sprint Nextel reported yesterday. more

Small US Operators - Q4 2007 Results
Since Rural Cellular, Suncom and Dobson have been sold to Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T respectively, there are now six mobile operators in the US which have between 250k and 10m customers. The largest of the six is US Cellular, which finished 2007 on 6.122m customers. The only other two companies with more than 1m customers are MetroPCS and Leap, with 3.963m and 2.864m respectively. The remaining three, in order of magnitude, are Qwest (0.824m), Cincinnati Bell (0.571m) and Ntelos (0.407m). more

More Mobiles than Landlines in Iowa
A report from Iowa's Utilities Board has found that at the middle of last year, the number of cellphone users in the US state exceeded the number of landlines by a total of 400,000. The report says that the total number of wireless connections in Iowa as of June 30, 2007, is 1,943,334. Wireless carriers are serving at least 97 percent of all Iowa communities. more
