School Sued for "Illegal" Cell Phone Search
The American Civil Liberties union and the ACLU of Mississippi have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of a middle school student, who it says was wrongfully expelled from school after authorities illegally searched his cell phone and found what they claimed were photos depicting "gang-related activity" - when in reality the photos mainly depicted the student dancing in the bathroom of his own home. more

Teachers want Mobile Phones Treated as Offensive Weapons
The UK teachers union, the NASUWT is calling on the government to categorise mobile phones as "potentially offensive weapons" when on school property. The rather extreme moves comes from the increase in pupils taking photos of teachers and uploading them to social networking websites such as MySpace and Bebo. At a meeting of the DfES Cyber bullying Task Group the union pressed for the proposals it has already put to Ministers to combat these activities to be taken forward. more

Explosions Destroy Russian Cellphone Towers
Two cellphone base station towers have been destroyed in explosions in Russia's North Ossetia. The region which borders Georgia's South Ossetia, has been subject to some ethnic conflicts, and following the Beslan School siege, attitudes to central Moscow have hardened. The Interfax news agency reported that no injuries occurred at the explosion near the villages of Kurtak and Dachnoye, citing local police. A second base station was destroyed in the regional capital, Vladikavkaz. more
