European Commission Approves Aid for Former Nokia Employees

The European Commission has approved an application by Germany for financial assistance for the former Nokia workers laid off when the company closed its factory in Bochum. The funding will help the 1,316 most disadvantaged among these dismissed workers to return to employment. The total estimated cost of this package is €11.1 million, of which the European Globalisation adjustment Fund has been asked to fund €5.5 million.  more

European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges

The European Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on SMS and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another EU country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from EUR0.46 to EUR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from EUR0.22 today to EUR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad.   more

EU Moves Closer to Approving 3G at 900Mhz

The decision by the European Parliament to accept the amendment of the GSM Directive to allow UMTS (WCDMA-HSPA) technology to be deployed in the 900 MHz band has been welcomed by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA).  more

Czech Republic Tries to Stop Media Talking about Phone Tapping

Journalist lobbying organisation, Reporters Without Borders has condemned a proposed criminal law amendment before the Czech republic parliament that would ban the news media from publishing any information about the tapping of phones by the police. The proposed amendment provides for sentences of one to five years in prison and fines up to 5 million crowns (€182,000) for violators.  more

3G Phones Bypass Jammers in Indian Parliament

A failure in the specifications for equipment designed to block mobile phones working inside the Indian Parliament resulted in 3G based phones starting to work last week after MTNL installed a 3G base station in the vicinity of the building.  more

Satellite Operators Welcome Plans for International Harmonisation of Radio Spectrum

The European Satellite Operators Association (ESOA) has welcomed the result of the Telecoms Council vote on the Telecoms Package especially in regard to the provisions that call for coordination and harmonisation with international regulation and the exceptions to technology and service neutrality. The Telecoms Council also recognised the fact that radio frequencies are a public good that has an important social, cultural and economic value.  more

EU Voice Call Roaming Price Caps Come into Effect Next Week

At the end of this month, it will become cheaper to make or receive calls while travelling in the European union (EU) as new regulatory price caps come into effect. These price reductions are the result of the EU Roaming Regulation, proposed by the European Commission in 2006 to curb the roaming charges consumers had to pay for roaming calls (on average ¢â€š¬1.15 per minute at the time).  more

EU Plans to Cut Roaming SMS Costs

The 2.5 billion text messages sent every year by roaming customers in the European union cost over 10 times more than domestic short messages (SMS) - claims figures released by the European Commission. The average cost of a roaming text message in the EU between October 2007 and March 2008 was ¢â€š¬0.29 according to the European Regulators' Group (ERG), but can be as high as ¢â€š¬0.80 for travellers from Belgium.  more
