European Commission Approves Aid for Former Nokia Employees

The European Commission has approved an application by Germany for financial assistance for the former Nokia workers laid off when the company closed its factory in Bochum. The funding will help the 1,316 most disadvantaged among these dismissed workers to return to employment. The total estimated cost of this package is €11.1 million, of which the European Globalisation adjustment Fund has been asked to fund €5.5 million.  more

European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges

The European Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on SMS and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another EU country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from EUR0.46 to EUR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from EUR0.22 today to EUR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad.   more

EU Moves Closer to Approving 3G at 900Mhz

EU Voice Call Roaming Price Caps Come into Effect Next Week

At the end of this month, it will become cheaper to make or receive calls while travelling in the European union (EU) as new regulatory price caps come into effect. These price reductions are the result of the EU Roaming Regulation, proposed by the European Commission in 2006 to curb the roaming charges consumers had to pay for roaming calls (on average ¢â€š¬1.15 per minute at the time).  more

EU Plans to Cut Roaming SMS Costs

The 2.5 billion text messages sent every year by roaming customers in the European union cost over 10 times more than domestic short messages (SMS) - claims figures released by the European Commission. The average cost of a roaming text message in the EU between October 2007 and March 2008 was ¢â€š¬0.29 according to the European Regulators' Group (ERG), but can be as high as ¢â€š¬0.80 for travellers from Belgium.  more
