Italy Facing Fines for Lack of Mobile Location Data from Emergency Calls

The European Commission has decided to ask the EU Court of Justice to fine Italy for failing to respect a previous Court judgement for not providing full caller location information for emergency services. Member States have an obligation to ensure that when a person dials Europe's single emergency number (112) from a mobile phone, details of his or her location are sent to the emergency services. The Commission's decision to refer Italy back to the Court follows two previous warnings from the Commission.  more

Legislation To Be Introduced To Repeal Immunity For Telecommunications Companies

A bill is expected to be introduced in the US Senate today that would repeal the immunity granted to telecommunications companies under the FISA Amendments Act (FAA) passed last year. By including the immunity provision in the FAA, Congress ensured the dismissal of active court cases pending against companies that aided the Bush administration in its illegal, unconstitutional and warrantless wiretapping program.  more

European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges

The European Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on SMS and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another EU country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from EUR0.46 to EUR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from EUR0.22 today to EUR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad.   more

NSA Spies On Americans Outside The Law

The American Civil Liberties union says that the USA's National Security Agency (NSA) has been intercepting Americans' emails and phone calls in recent months to an extent that exceeded even the overbroad limits permitted under the controversial spying legislation passed last summer.
