Genasys Wins Location Based Services Contract in Pakistan

Genasys says that it has signed an agreement with the firm CellTrack for a LBS project in Pakistan. CellTrack will launch, from the first quarter of 2009, location based services (LBS) in Pakistan. CellTrack has signed agreements with two operators, ufone and Zong, to launch LBS in this country and it is currently into negotiations to extend the services to other operators.  more

Pakistan Sees Lowest Quarterly Growth Rate for 8 Years

PakistanÃ's quarterly customer growth rate stood at 6.7% in Q2, the lowest level recorded since the first quarter of 2000, when there was a fledgling market of just 0.3m customers. On an annual basis growth fell to 39.4%, down 45.1pp compared to the prior twelve months. The total market stood at 88.05m customers at the end of Q2 with penetration at 51.0%, and one possible explanation for the slowdown is that the market is approaching the natural limit for potential customers at the current price points. Certainly the slowdown is a long-term one, as the graph on the left demonstrates.  more

Pakistani Operator Launches MMS Video News Clips

ROK Entertainment has announced the launch of its mobile News on Demand (NOD) service with ufone in Pakistan. Titled as ufoneÃ's "Video News Service", subscribers receive 3 videos per day of 60 seconds each, sent via MMS, containing the latest sports and breaking news for a fee of R 50/ per month.  more

Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground

The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and DoCoMo from Japan. Together, the nine have a total of 831m customers, or just under 25% of the global market.  more

Pakistan Planning 3G Spectrum Auction

Pakistan is expected to auction off three blocks of 3G spectrum in the next few months - reports local media. As the existing mobile licenses are technology neutral and therefore can already offer 3G service (hardware permitting), there wont be a 3G license process - simply the allocation of spectrum in the 3G bands - namely 2.1Ghz.  more

Telenor Pakistan reaches 15 million customers

Telenor Pakistan says that it has passed 15 million customers - a landmark it has achieved in less than three years of operations. The company says that in 2007, it grew nearly 200 percent in terms of customers, experiencing the highest growth in the industry in Pakistan by a wide margin compared to its competitors.  more

PTA Pakistan June 2007 Customer Numbers

In the first quarter of 2007 Telenor trumped all of its competitors to lead the net additions race in Pakistan's fast-growing mobile market. However, in the second quarter, Telenor slipped into fourth place behind all of its major competitors despite the fact that it had the third best quarter in its nine quarter history. Pakistan Telecom's ufone emerged as the front runner in Q2 2007 with 2.4m net additions to its base taking the total to 14m. It was followed by market leader Mobilink with 1.8m, new Singtel associate Warid Telecom with 1.7m and then Telenor with 1.6m. In total a record 7.6m new customers were added in Pakistan in the quarter, taking the total count to over 63m and the penetration rate to 37%. In the process both Telenor and Warid exceeded the 10m customer mark, finishing the period with 10.70m and 10.62m customers, respectively. more

Huawei Completes Middle Eastern HSDPA Rollout

Huawei says it has successfully deployed what it says is the largest High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network in the Middle East, for Etisalat in UAE. This network covers 97% of the populated areas in the country and Etisalat was able to support more than one million 3G end-users that signed up within the first five months of 2007. more
