A group at the University of Washington (UW) has developed software that for the first time enables deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans to use sign language over a mobile phone. UW engineers got the phones working together this spring, and recently received a National Science Foundation grant for a 20-person field project that will begin next year in Seattle.  more

Cingular Wireless To Impose Surcharge On Older Phones

NEW YORK (AP)--About 4.7 million Cingular Wireless subscribers with older phones will have to pay US$5 extra each month as the company tries to prod them to get new handsets so it can devote its entire network to one type of signal.  more
