Vodafone Turkey Lost 1.24 Million Subscribers in Q1 2009
Turkey followed Italy and the UK in suffering a quarterly loss to its customer base. The 1.44m decline was the largest ever seen, as well as being the first for seven years. At the end of Q1 09, the total customer base stood at 64.48m, just 3.1% above the Q1 08 total. This was the lowest growth rate ever recorded in the Turkish market and 12.3pp below the year-earlier rate. Penetration fell back below 90% during the quarter, finishing on 89.0%. However, there is every chance that a resurgence in growth will take penetration over 100% once 3G is launched, with reports suggesting that the first W-CDMA networks will be operational very soon. more

Just a few days after apparently announcing plans to hire 500 extra staff this year, Vodafone Turkey has announced 260 job cuts as part of a corporate restructuring. The job cuts came as part of "an organizational overhaul" and to increase efficiency, the company said in a statement. more

Turkey has awarded three 3G licenses to the incumbent operators following an auction to battle over the spectrum allocation. turkcell won the largest block (A License) with a bid of €358 million ($462 million), followed by Vodafone and Avea with bids of €250 million (US$323 million) and €214 million (US$276 million) respectively. more

Turkey to Offer 3G Licenses Within Six Months
Turkey is to launch a tender for 3G licenses within the next six months, reports the government's Official Gazette, where all new laws are published. According to the Gazette, the minimum value of the A License is set as US$405 million, while the minimum value is US$355 million for the B License, US$304 million for the C License and US$253 million for the D License. more

Turkey to Get Number Portability by Year-End
Turkey's telecoms regulator has announced that it will mandate mobile number portability to be launched in November this year. Tayfun Acarer, head of the Telecommunications Board told reporters that he expects the infrastructure should be in place within the next couple of months, but the service would not launch immediately to allow for testing. more

Europe's Top Ten Networks - All Now Over 20m Customers
In Issue 98 of the Mobile World Briefing, when last reviewing the European market, we suggested that "if the normal seasonal pattern is repeated in Q4, then the final period of the year should see something between 25-30m new connections, enough to take penetration up to 110%". Vodafone Accuses Turkcell of Obstructing Mobile Number Portability
Vodafone Turkey CEO Attila Vitai has accused market leader, turkcell of curbing efforts to introduce mobile number portability into the country. Turkcell Picks up Turkey's Only 3G License
Turkey's turkcell has won, what has become the country's sole 3G license after other bidders withdrew from a televised auction. The company is paying US$440 million for the license, although that rises to about US$510 once you include taxes. The auction was due to have occurred earlier this year but was delayed for unspecified reasons, although that was widely believed to be due to the political difficulties pending the snap election held a couple of weeks ago. more
