Turkcell Secures Export Financing for Ericsson 3G Kit Purchase

Turkey Awards 3G Licenses

Turkey has awarded three 3G licenses to the incumbent operators following an auction to battle over the spectrum allocation. turkcell won the largest block (A License) with a bid of €358 million ($462 million), followed by Vodafone and Avea with bids of €250 million (US$323 million) and €214 million (US$276 million) respectively.  more

Turkey to Offer 3G Licenses Within Six Months

Turkey is to launch a tender for 3G licenses within the next six months, reports the government's Official Gazette, where all new laws are published. According to the Gazette, the minimum value of the A License is set as US$405 million, while the minimum value is US$355 million for the B License, US$304 million for the C License and US$253 million for the D License.  more

Belarus Planning 3G License Auction

It has been reported that Belarus is planning to award 3G licenses in the near future. The BBC Monitoring service, citing a report by the Belapan news agency said that new entrants to the market would be allowed to bid for the licenses.  more

Turkey to Get Number Portability by Year-End

Turkey's telecoms regulator has announced that it will mandate mobile number portability to be launched in November this year. Tayfun Acarer, head of the Telecommunications Board told reporters that he expects the infrastructure should be in place within the next couple of months, but the service would not launch immediately to allow for testing.  more

3G License Granted in Northern Cyprus

The telecoms authority for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has granted a 3G license to Turkish operator, turkcell last Friday. turkcell launched its network in Northern Cyprus in July 1999. Vodafone, which through its acquisition of Turkey's Telsim also operates a GSM network in Northern Cyprus is also expected to be granted a 3G license shortly.  more

Vodafone Accuses Turkcell of Obstructing Mobile Number Portability

Vodafone Turkey CEO Attila Vitai has accused market leader, turkcell of curbing efforts to introduce mobile number portability into the country.
