Turkish Operator Tests Adverts for Airtime Service
Turkish mobile network operator, turkcell says that it has completed the trial of a mobile advertising system that displayed a full-screen advert on the handset after each phone call. The trial was available to a select group of turkcell customers, allowing them to participate in the trial for a period of four weeks in exchange for free airtime. more

Court Orders Sale of Turkcell Stake to TeliaSonera for $3.1 Billion
TeliaSonera has won a legal ruling forcing Turkish holding company, Cukurova to sell its stake in turkcell Holding to TeliaSonera for a cash consideration of US$3.1 billion. TeliaSonera says that it now intends to enforce the award against Cukurova in Turkey. If the shares are not delivered, TeliaSonera will demand damages from Cukurova in the amount of US$1.8 billion, which is the value for TeliaSonera of a lost transaction as determined by the arbitration tribunal. more

Turkcell Profits Down on Ukraine Problems
turkcell Group has reported that its second-quarter revenues grew by 1.1% to TRY2,204 million, mainly driven by turkcell Turkey's strong operational performance. However, the Ukrainian operation Astelit and the betting business Inteltek reported weaker results. Astelit was negatively impacted by a GDP drop in Ukraine of 20% and by devaluation. more

Turkcell selects Alcatel-Lucent for "All IP" 3G transmission network in Turkey
Turkish operator, turkcell has ordered an IP/MPLS solution from Alcatel-Lucent to support its migration to an all-IP transmission network. The deployment is due to be completed in a few months. more

Vodafone Turkey Lost 1.24 Million Subscribers in Q1 2009
Turkey followed Italy and the UK in suffering a quarterly loss to its customer base. The 1.44m decline was the largest ever seen, as well as being the first for seven years. At the end of Q1 09, the total customer base stood at 64.48m, just 3.1% above the Q1 08 total. This was the lowest growth rate ever recorded in the Turkish market and 12.3pp below the year-earlier rate. Penetration fell back below 90% during the quarter, finishing on 89.0%. However, there is every chance that a resurgence in growth will take penetration over 100% once 3G is launched, with reports suggesting that the first W-CDMA networks will be operational very soon. more

Turkcell Guarantees Loan for Ukraine GSM Expansion
Turkish telco, turkcell says that it is to guarantee a US$75 million loan being signed by its Dutch subsidiary, Financell to fund network expansion by Astelit - a mobile network in Ukraine. The financing will be used for the products and services that will be purchased from Ericsson AB and Ericsson Ukraine for Astelit LLC's 2G infrastructure investments. more
