Indian Regulator Wants Speedy Allocation of 3G Licenses

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (trai) has published a paper calling for the speedy allocation of radio spectrum for 3G and WiMAX services in the country. The trai reports that the Indian Government announced Broadband Policy in 2004 and made certain projections for broadband subscribers' growth. It was expected that broadband growth rate would be stepped up. However, it is observed that the growth of broadband in the country is slow and below expected level.  more

Indian Regulator Favours Auction for 3G License Awards

India's telecoms regulator, trai favours an auction for the future 3G spectrum allocations. Speaking at FICCI seminar, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India chairman Nripendra Misra also said that the auction should be restricted to incumbent operators and not opened to new entrants.  more

Indian Network Interconnection Congestion Falls - Slightly

India's telecoms regulator, the trai has reported that congestion at the Point of Interconnection (POI) between various service providers on the Indian cellular networks has declined slightly during the Months of April, May and June. The report only includes the Service Providers who do not meet the trai stipulated POI Congestion benchmark of 0.5 per cent of the calls taking place between two networks, meaning that only 1 out of 200 calls are allowed to be disrupted.  more

Indian Regulator Recommends Network Infrastructure Sharing

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (trai) says that it is supporting plans to allow network infrastructure sharing in India. The Department of Telecommunication had sought recommendations from trai on effective sharing of passive infrastructure (towers etc.). Given the significance of infrastructure sharing the Authority says that it not only considered the issue of passive infrastructure sharing but has given the recommendation regarding active infrastructure sharing and backhaul on a suo-motu basis. more

Significant Drop in Mobile User Satisfaction Levels in 2006

A nation-wide mobile users' satisfaction survey carried out in India shows that there has been a large scale drop in satisfaction of mobile phone subscribers with respect to most service providers during 2006 compared to the previous year. The 4th survey conducted by the publication, Voice&Data, is based on a sample base of 4,524 respondents across 51 Indian cities in 23 states. more
