Etisalat's Entry Could Weigh on Sri Lankan Telecom Operators' Credit Quality

­The entry of Etisalat into Sri Lanka can further delay any prospects for recovery in the Sri Lankan telecom operators' profitability, says Fitch Ratings. Millicom International Cellular recently sold its fully-owned subsidiary in Sri Lanka, tigo, to Etisalat in a competitive bidding process. tigo is the third-largest mobile telephony operator in Sri Lanka with a market share of around 20% and a nationwide network footprint.  more

Millicom Commits to Year-End Launch for Rwandan Network

­Millicom has committed to launch its tigo branded mobile phone network in Rwanda by the end of this year. The company was granted a license by the regulator last November. The company paid US$60 million for the 15 year license.  more

Etisalat Interested in Sri Lanka Investment

Etisalat is reported to be considering an investment in Sri Lanka now that the military aspect of its decades long civil war has largely concluded. An official from the UAE-based operator is currently visiting the tropical island meeting stakeholders, including the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).  more

Millicom Sells Sierra Leone Network

Millicom International has sold its Sierra Leone subsidiary to Africell Holding for an undisclosed amount. The operator, trading as tigo was earmarked for sale by Millicom late last year, shortly after the regulator announced that all operators would be required to reach a minimum of 50% population coverage by the end of the year.  more

Millicom Q2 Revenues Up 5% - Profits Down by 13%

Millicom International has reported a five percent rise in Q2 revenues to US$814 million compared to a year ago but a drop of 13% in net profits of $114 million, down from the US$132 million a year ago. In Q2 09, Millicom added 1.7 million net new mobile subscribers, reaching 30.8 million total mobile subscribers, an increase of 25% versus Q2 08 as Millicom continues its focus on attracting the more loyal and higher revenue generating customers.  more

CDMA Network Launched in Tanzania

A new network has launched in Tanzania, as Dovetel started its CDMA network in Dar-es-Salaam. The network, branded as Sasatel will expand its network in several phases over the next few years. The company is 65% owned by PME African Infrastructure Opportunities, an investment company established to invest in sub-Saharan African infrastructure and infrastructure related industries.  more

Telecom Argentina - Annual growth over 20% despite high penetration rate

Telecom Argentina operates Argentina's third largest mobile network by customer numbers, with 13.17m connections at the end of Q1 09. On an annual basis it was the fastest growing of the country's four networks with a growth rate of 21.0%, up from 16.9% for the prior twelve months. This is an impressive rate given that penetration in Argentina stood at around 110% at the end of the quarter.  more

3G Subscriptions in the Honduras Market to Surge by 30% by 2014

3G subscriptions in the Honduras telecommunications market will surge to 30 percent by 2014, up from 2 percent today, according to a new report from Pyramid Research. With a total revenue of US$863 million in 2008, the telecommunications market in Honduras ranks 14th in Latin America and fourth in Central America. However, the market will expand at a CAGR of 4.6 percent over the next five years, the fourth highest expansion rate in the region, notes Jose Magana, analyst at Pyramid Research and co-author of the report.  more
