A new study confirms what most people already know: sending text messages and driving are a potentially lethal combination. Twenty-one teens using a driving simulator while sending text messages or searching their MP3s slowed down, wove in an out of their lanes, and, in some cases, ran over pedestrians, according to a study presented to the Pediatric Academic Societies. more

CTIA Reports US Mobile Data Revenues Jumped 39% in 2008
The US trade body, the CTIA has published the findings of its semi-annual industry survey, which includes numerous positive metrics on the industry's continued growth and popularity. In particular, wireless revenues showed impressive year-to year gains, as wireless data service revenues for the year 2008 rose to more than $32 billion. This represents a 39% increase over 2007, when data revenues totaled $23.2 billion. Wireless data revenues for 2008 amounted to nearly 22% of all wireless service revenues, and represent what consumers spend on non-voice services. more

Lack of Education Restricts Growth of Mobile Instant Messaging
Research released today by instant messaging vendor, ProcessOne, has revealed that 60% of mobile users would send less text messages if they were better educated about how to use mobile instant messaging (IM) services. Despite many more of today's mobile handsets having IM capability only 35% of the users surveyed currently used mobile IM with text messaging remaining the dominant communications medium. more

A 13-year old girl in California sent 484 text messages every day in December - an average of one message every 2 minutes during the waking hours. UK Airline Tests SMS Service on London-Moscow Flights
UK based airline, BMI has announced that it is to start trials of in-flight text messaging from mobile phones on flights between London and Moscow. The service, which is being supplied by OnAir, is being trialled for six months on a single Airbus A320 aircraft operating between Heathrow and Moscow. more
