Charity Text Messages to be Tax Free in the UK
Premium rate text messages sent in the UK as a way of donating to charities will no longer be subjected to a sales tax, under a deal agreed by the Mobile Data Association. The new framework means charities of all sizes will be able to receive an additional 15% (standard rate of VAT) for donations sent via text message. In the past this has only happened for large national charitable events such as Comic Relief. more

Older Adults Increasingly Adopt Text Messaging
New research from US operator, Sprint Nextel confirms that the under-30 crowd is definitely texting in mass, and they're driving their parents to text, too. The number of adults who are texting has risen from just two years ago, when a 2006 Pew Research study cited that 13 percent of adults ages 50-64 used the text messaging function on their mobile phone. The Sprint study reveals that now 20 percent of adults ages 55-64 send text messages. more

EU Plans to Cut Roaming SMS Costs
The 2.5 billion text messages sent every year by roaming customers in the European Union cost over 10 times more than domestic short messages (SMS) - claims figures released by the European Commission. The average cost of a roaming text message in the EU between October 2007 and March 2008 was ¢â€š¬0.29 according to the European Regulators' Group (ERG), but can be as high as ¢â€š¬0.80 for travellers from Belgium. more
