Study shows texting while driving can be deadly

A new study confirms what most people already know: sending text messages and driving are a potentially lethal combination. Twenty-one teens using a driving simulator while sending text messages or searching their MP3s slowed down, wove in an out of their lanes, and, in some cases, ran over pedestrians, according to a study presented to the Pediatric Academic Societies.  more

A bus driver in Ireland has lost his appeal for unfair dismissal after being sacked for using a mobile phone while driving the bus. Arunas Juodikis denied that he was using a mobile phone though, and tried to argue that he had been holding a case for his glasses when observed by his manager.  more

British Lord Jailed over Fatal Road Accident After Sending Text Messages

The British Lord  has been jailed for 12 weeks following a conviction for dangerous driving which lead to a fatal crash. Lord Ahmed, a Labour peer in the House of Lords was involved in an accident on Christmas Day 2007 when it hit another motorist who was killed instantly.  more

Woman Faces Jail for Death While Texting Road Accident

A woman has been warned that she faces a lengthy jail sentence after being convicted of killing a motorist  shortly after she had used her mobile phone while driving. Philippa Curtis, of Suffolk, hit the back of Victoria McBryde's car at 70mph in Oxfordshire. Ms McBryde suffered a fatal brain injury from the accident.  more

Older Adults Increasingly Adopt Text Messaging

New research from US operator, Sprint Nextel confirms that the under-30 crowd is definitely texting in mass, and they're driving their parents to text, too. The number of adults who are texting has risen from just two years ago, when a 2006 Pew Research study cited that 13 percent of adults ages 50-64 used the text messaging function on their mobile phone. The Sprint study reveals that now 20 percent of adults ages 55-64 send text messages.  more

Texting While Driving - More Dangerous than Drinking or Smoking Cannabis

Texting while driving impairs driving skills more than being drunk or high, according to new research carried out by the UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) for the roadside assistance organisation, the Royal Automobile Club (RAC). Despite the danger, nearly half (48%) of UK drivers aged 18 - 24 admit to using SMS whilst driving - a group already at much higher risk of being involved in a crash.  more

Nearly Half of US Motorists Use Mobile Phones While Driving

Nearly half of US drivers between ages 18 and 24 say they have sent a text message, instant message or e-mail while driving, according to a new survey by FindLaw. The survey found that 48 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 and 24, and more than a quarter (27 percent) of drivers 25 to 34, admit to texting while behind the wheel. Seventeen percent of all adults surveyed say they have texted while driving.  more

UK Sees 25% Jump in Mobile Internet Use Over Past 12 Months

The UK based Mobile Data Association (MDA) has published its latest quarterly data report on mobile phone usage across the UK. The report covers activity from January - May 2008 for Text Messaging (SMS), Mobile Internet (MI) and Picture and Video Messaging (MMS) and identifies new trends in the way people are increasingly relying on their mobile phones.  more
