Premium SMS Scratchcard Vendor Fined for Misleading Promotions

The UK's premium rate telephony regulator, PhonepayPlus has slapped a £100,000 fine on a company that used scratchcards to promote a premium SMS service. Abstract Games (trading as Mediaprom) has also been barred from providing or operating any scratchcard services for six months, except those for which compliance advice has been sought and implemented to PhonepayPlus' satisfaction.  more

Charity Text Messages to be Tax Free in the UK

Premium rate text messages sent in the UK as a way of donating to charities will no longer be subjected to a sales tax, under a deal agreed by the Mobile Data Association. The new framework means charities of all sizes will be able to receive an additional 15% (standard rate of VAT) for donations sent via text message. In the past this has only happened for large national charitable events such as Comic Relief.  more

Two Million Mexicans Register their PrePay Phone

Mexico's telecoms regulator, Cofetel says that nearly nine million mobile phone users have registered their personal details with a central registry since it was launched two months ago. During the period from April 10 and June 10, 8, 729, 199 mobile phone users have registered successfully their telephone number in the National Register of Mobile Phone Users (RENAUT).  more

O2 UK to Offer Free Twitter SMS Updates

O2 UK has announced that it will offer free text message updates for the Twitter service from next month. ­From the start of August, every O2 customer will be able to switch on text notifications within Twitter and receive replies and direct messages completely free. O2 customers will also be able to send updates to Twitter as part of their normal text message bundle or for the cost of a normal text.  more
